The Act of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is like a wound that heals over time. Forgiveness is essential to having a healthy relationship. One needs to surpass the past, in order to learn and move on. In reality, it is hard to forgive and forget, but learning from mistakes aids to the healing, the healing that leads to forgiveness coming from the heart. In “The Charmer”, the son Zackery seeks forgiveness from his parents for his reckless actions as an adoescent. Similarily, in the “The Leaving”, the mother seeks forgiveness for herself and her children. The mother realizes that it is time to fix her mistakes and raise her children right. His apology makes it easier for his parents to forgive him, as opposed to having no apology at all. The act of realizing faults within oneself weaves its way to forgiveness. Similarly, the mother from “The Leaving” says to her daughter, “But y' can't expect no miracles. It's my own fault fer raisin' four boys like they was little men” (115). Instead of blaming her sons for being irresponsible, she finds the faults within herself, and tries to get her own sense of forgiveness from herself and her children. The mother recognizes her guilt, she wants her children to be brought up in a well manner not just for the present, but for the future. She wants her son to grow into a man, opposite of what his father conveys towards her. In order for forgiveness to take place, one needs to step forward and realize their faults by making a simple apology. The apology can be towards a parent, child, or towards ones inner conscience. An apology is like a vow, which needs to be proven by action. For instance, in order for one to accept an apology, and gain forgiveness truthfully, an act of sorrow needs to be done. In “The Charmer”, Zackery's father displays an ultimatum, “You got two choices, my boy... you can stick around and be just what you suggest. You can be one of our hired servants. I should've taken you up on that offer fourteen years back” (106). For the love of his son, Zackery's father gives him the freedom to choose what he wants. He is given the chance to be a better person. This opportunity is driven by the love of his parents, they forgive him regardless of his decisions because he is their son. Likewise, in “The Leaving”, the mother displays affection towards her sons, she says, “I loves you all, regardless,” she said softly,” and it's worth a try. Jem”--she spoke to the youngest--”I'd be right grateful if you'd fetch some water for Sylvie, She's real tired after the long walk” (115). When the mother tells her son to do chores, he listens to her, this signifies change. Change is necessary in order for one to move on from past faults and look into the future.
