Poems can be written in many different ways resulting in a change of feel while reading the poem. In the poems “At Woodward’s Gardens”, ‘Mending Wall”, “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, and “Black Umbrellas” each writer comes at writing a poem differently, but no matter how the writers write their poems they still get their message out. Some of these poems focus on the story while others focus on the message. “At Woodward’s Gardens” tells the story of two boys making piece of glass and making it reflect light onto two monkeys, burning them. As the boys are doing this they get too close to the cage and the monkeys snatch the glass. After looking at the piece of glass for a minute the monkeys break it. The monkeys may not have known what is was or why it burned them, but they did understand that is was dangerous so they broke it to protect themselves. This poem has a story but also shows the reader how animals can be more intelligent than we think. …show more content…
No soldiers disobeyed this command and had full trust in their commander. As they continued on they were shot, but this did not stop them from persevering. They used their swords to fight, but they were outnumbered; only a few men survived. This shows the soldier’s loyalty to their commander. This poem is similar to “At Woodward’s Gardens” because it focuses on the story, both have a discrete message. The message in “At Woodward’s Gardens” is knowledge is not power and trusting your instincts is key. The message in “Valley of Death” is always trust your superiors, no matter how crazy the task they ask you to preform

Poetry is a form of literature used to convey ones emotions or describe an event in a beautiful and unique way. Poems typically contain hidden meaning that can only be discovered through further analysis of all aspects of the poem including form, sound devices, literary devices, and diction. Even with a further analysis, it is very difficult to ever be certain of the true meaning that the writer is trying to convey, and some poems may take on different meanings based on the reader and their personal experiences. The poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, is about soldiers who do not hesitate to charge into battle despite them knowing that someone had made a mistake in giving the order to charge. The 1900’s are known for world wars, psychedelic drugs, classic rock and believe it or not, poetry. Poetry may come as a surprise to most, however, Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” and Dylan Thomas’ “Do not Go Gentle into that Good Night” are influential in how they depict the impact of choice and the impact of death on human life. Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” is about decision making when faced with a “fork in the road” situation and how taking one choice will result in never knowing where the alternative road could have taken you. Thomas’ “Do not Go Gentle into that Good Night” is about the death of his father and how his father should die with rage instead of humility because rage is what he is made of. Both poems represent different…

Lines and phrases that would seem odd and pointless in everyday communication, is meaningful and contributes to a theme in poetry. William Blake’s “A Poison Tree”, a poem about the gradual development of trapped anger, and Jim Miller’s “Spring Storm”, a poem about inconstant emotions, both support a poem’s ability to surge above the simplicity of daily speech and serve to embellish our point of view of the world around…

Literature Paper Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone. Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. It is written in subtly and sounds simple, so the true meaning behind the poem is not really understood until the end, and has a deeper meaning.…

Written in the first person from the standpoint of one of the soldiers, the first stanza expresses the idea that the two men who fought would, had they in other circumstances met each other outside a pub, have enjoyed a few drinks ('right many a nipperkin') together. Yet it becomes clear in the second stanza that they in fact met as foot soldiers on opposing sides in a battle, and being confronted with each other, one had to die. The two men shot at each other, and the narrator's shot fatally injured the other man. It is easy to appreciate this poem and to identify with the soldier and his feelings, sympathizing with his predicament and sensing that he regrets having had to kill his enemy. We understand that individual soldiers do not necessarily nurture hatred for those they are fighting against, but see them as human beings in circumstances similar to their own, enlisting in order to earn money and suppport a family.…

Prior to this assignment, I did not have much experience in reading or analyzing poetry. I did not often think deeply about poetry and the subtlety with which poets craft their pieces, however, this was a great opportunity to fix that. “In “A Poison Tree,” William Blake employs metaphors, allusions, and rhymes to demonstrate the effects of suppressed anger and deception” (Gomez, “Anger and Deceit” 1). This was the thesis sentence written for the essay, in which, tangible and clear opinions are stated. By stating and supporting this statement with analyses such as “the metaphors in this piece contribute to its theme of anger suppression,” I exhibited writing that shows audiences that I read, reflected, and responded to the poem through the essay (Gomez, “Anger and Deceit” 2).…
