What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a movie about a young man named Gilbert, his younger brother; Arnie and their life and family in a small town named Endora. Gilbert seems to be the sole income and guardian of his brother even with his sisters and mother at home. The movie was made in 1983, and is probably one of the best serious films I have ever seen. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a sad and moving film that leaves you rooting for Gilbert to get out of town and his life.
Ellen Grape is a sixteen-year-old girl. Like all the Grape kids she is a brunette. Ellen plays trumpet in the school band and obviously worries about her peers’ perceptions. Near the end of the movie she says, “There’s going to be a crowd, I just know there is going to be a crowd.” Illustrating her young worries. Had the film been more focused on her character, I suspect it would have been easier to identify her actions as being part of her developmental stage. But, mostly she comes off as a slightly self-centered little brat. Which I suppose is on par with being involved in finding your own identity in difficult circumstances.
