It’s rather strange how plot can control a story and how it (plot) can develop. Because My Antonia is somewhat of a memoir it doesn’t follow a traditional or conventional plot layout. Because the story is written as a memoir you know the bare bone of the story, it begins with a young boy and you know he will grow up to be a man and then… who knows? And, while My Antonia doesn’t use a conventional plot layout it still has some of the same elements of any other story that does follow conventional plot. He only knew what she wanted him to know and that’s what he wrote down in this book. And maybe that’s true for all of the book, not just the ending. There is always risk of self aggrandizing when it comes to having a first person narrative because the author knows all that has happened and all that will happen and with Jim perhaps he wanted to seem more heroic and so he made life in Nebraska seem more dramatic than it actually was and made Antonia's life seem more dull and heartbreaking than it really
