Option VI. The Nature of a Totalitarian State Winston Smith is the main character of this chapter. The leader, or at least the face, of the ruling party in society, simply called the Party, is “Big Brother”. There is a dark-haired girl mentioned, who is a part of the so-called Junior Anti-Sex League, and a part of the Outer Party. Winston feels hatred towards her, because she is beautiful and young, and he knows he will never have any kind of relationship with her. Another party member, who works for the Inner Party, is O’Brien, a man Winston sometimes feels a slight connection to. Since he works for the Inner Party, which might be the elite, he is perceived as more important, hence he wearing a black overall, when Winston wears a blue. This might also signify that O’Brien is “worse”, darker, than people with blue ones. If not, at least he is different. A sandy-haired woman is mentioned, she is very pertinent in her hatred towards the antagonist, Emmanuel Goldstein. Goldstein was a former member of the Party, and later revolted against it. It made me analyze society from a different perspective than I usually do and I will definitely read the whole book. The concept of totalitarianism in today’s society is intriguing, and signs of it is something I will continue to look for when reading news etc. I think it is more important now than ever to be aware of the fact that the government has huge power and sometimes, even if we do not want to believe it, misuses it. I am pretty sure that reasons we do not want to believe it are the most interesting part, why it is so hard for us to open our eyes a little and try to see what really is going on. I think that maybe we do not want to know. It is easier to believe that everything is fine than to do the opposite, but the only way we can change anything for the better is by seeing society and the world we live in for what it really
