They people basically left because they knew that his actions could have hurt them. They did not have trust in him anymore, he lost that with all the things he did. If he would have cared he would have protected them, but more importantly, he would have put them before anything else. Everyone thought that beowulf was trying to hurt them, which was kind of true because he did not think of them before his actions. He was described as an ugly beast like creature. He was really big which made people terrified of him. His appearance fits into the category of a monster. That is one of the first things people look at, the appearance. His appearance made them afraid of him. If he was not ugly and beast looking like he was, he would have been treated differently by others. He would not have had other monsters as his enemies. They thought he was a bad creature. That made him a monster, the way that he looked made others think that he was evil and bad. If he would have took care of his reputation than maybe people would have looked at him in a whole different prespective. He ruined it so he has to suffer the consequences of being hated by many and left behind be his people, because they were scared of his actions. His appearence would not have matter much.
