"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles." - Christopher Reeve. You may think of heroes as people in movies with superpower and capes who can fly, but as you'll find out, that isn't the case at all. A hero can be any common person put in an uncommonly difficult situation. Heroes can be the people you see when you're walking down the road, whom you pay no attention to, they could be your neighbor, who you wave at every morning, it could be the person giving you your total at the grocery store. A hero doesn’t have be famous, or look a certain way. Our way of seeing heroes can be completely opposite of what they really are, and we may not appreciate the real ones that …show more content…
For example, in the book Forged by Fire, the main character Gerald saves his little sister from their mothers boyfriend Jordan numerous times. Even though Gerald knew that Jordan would result in abusing him more, he took the hits for his little sister from the first day they met. A hero is willing to stand up for anyone, even while knowing the outcome. Gerald is a hero because even though he knew he was risking his life, he never stopped himself from saving his sister and comforting her. After not knowing what Gerald could do to help, he finally told someone about the things Jordan did to him and Angel and put him in jail. Gerald showed heroism because he had the courage to do the right thing, even though if it went wrong his life would be in danger. Also, in the end of the book, Gerald runs into his burning apartment to save Angel once again. This was hard for him because of his past experiences with fire, but he knew that it was the right thing to do and he knew what Jordan was doing to her. He could have easily cowered out, but instead he was heroic and endured his aversion and darted into the apartment that was being eaten by flames. While trying to save her, Jordan tried to kill Gerald, broke his leg and injured him substantially, and yet, Gerald continued to fight. He got to his sister who was unconscious, and started to try and find a way out of the house. He wanted to just let the fire
