Servant Leadership Defined Many leadership styles exist. The determining factor if a leadership style is effective or not is often how it is carried out and if it is appeasing to those, the leader is attempting to lead. One of the leadership styles that has become popular is servant leadership. “Greenleaf developed, servant leadership more than thirty-five years ago and he identified ten characteristics that pertain to servant leadership” (Marquis, 2009, p. 56). However, when servant leadership references healing it accounts for healing one’s self as well as others. Greenleaf identifies that as a servant leader who is healing “the search for wholeness is something that the servant-leader and the follower share”(Swearingen, 2004, p.103). I think of myself as an assertive personality but open to various opinions but the end goal was to complete the task. Through my research, I have found how beneficial it can be to take on the qualities of a servant leader. I feel that it is often forgotten that employees are people and want to be treated as if they matter to their leader. When combining all the characteristics of being a servant leader I feel that there is not a person that could be forgotten or a relationship that could not be made stronger. It gives me an optimistic goal of becoming a servant leader wherever the field of nursing takes me.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is evident that servant leadership can be applied to any industry and if done properly the results will be positive. If servant leadership was used by more industries the employees and leaders would be happier. Greenleaf, developed a leadership style that will continue to prosper if leaders use the opportunity to implement the change and take the time to ensure that it is done with the properly to ensure
