Some of the characteristics that I believe that you have to have to be a nurse are compassion, concern, dependability, honesty, integrity, kindness, knowledge, non-judgmental, and responsiveness. I selected these characteristics from the list under Professional Nursing Values in Professional Nursing by Beth Perry Black. These are values that people in the professional nursing field should have in order to fulfill the shoes of a nurse. “Values are the freely chosen principles, ideals, or standards held by an individual, class or group that give meaning and direction to life” (Black). In the nursing profession it is important to have clear set values because you will face situations where you have to control your opinions about those values. “Values influence behavior” (Black), therefore if you have unclear values you may lack direction or decision making skills. In the profession of nursing you need to be able to make good decision, and have persistence. Some other skills that would help in the professional nursing field are: balancing care and cure, accountability and responsibility for own actions, focus on patient defined quality of life, health promotion, listening attentively, patient advocacy, patient education and team work. These are from the same list in Professional Nursing by Beth Perry Black. Two women in the history of nursing that demonstrated these characteristics are Florence Nightingale and Virginia Henderson. Nightingale’s philosophy was “health, illness, and nurse’s role in caring for the patient. Importantly, she made a distinction between the work of nursing and the work of physicians by identifying health rather than illness as the major concern of nursing” (Black). Her philosophy focused more on what needed to change in the environment.
