Finally I think I have practiced many styles of leadership over the years I am currently trying to practice servant leadership as described in Robert Greenleaf 's book The Servant as Leader. He sates Servant-Leadership is a philosophy that relies upon: principle-centeredness, working through people, giving direction and support that serves to help people. If all, or at least the majority of individuals choose to work harmoniously, then the systemic affect of these individual choices crafts a stronger organization. My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. As we reflect on Robert Greenleaf's book, Servant Leadership, Greenleaf asserts that "it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve" (Greenleaf, 1977, p.27), and that servant leadership begins with the person. Negatively, the rewards of money, recognition, power, as well as pride and fear can create a leadership style that reflects "it's all about me " (Blanchard, Hodges, Hendry, 2016, p. 1). In the book Lead Like Jesus Revisited, the authors suggest that leadership is "a journey that begins with your transformation" (Blanchard, et al., 2016, p. 2).…

Guidance, direction, and management are three words that describe the trait of leadership. The dictionary describes leadership as the action of leading a group of people or organization. I agree with this definition but also believe that leadership is a skill that is hard to master, and makes people around you feel more secure with where they're going and what they're doing with their time. We see and follow leaders everyday such as teachers, parents, fellow peers and even sometimes we’re the ones showing leadership to the people around us. And while leadership can be a good thing, there are times when leadership is not necessary or even taken too far.…

Using the Servant Leadership Theory does have its downsides, unfortunately. One issue is that other leaders utilizing other leadership techniques could see the Servant Leadership methods as weak. One of the biggest issues with Servant Leadership Theory is that the leader is constantly sharing things as opposed to keeping thigs like information and power to themselves (Daft, 2014). This leadership style could make other leaders underestimate the power that a leader using the Servant Leadership Theory maintains. I know particularly in the Office of the District Attorney where I currently work, other departments are predominantly male-run, by men who have no qualms giving orders.…

One of the similarities that servant and transformational leadership style possesses is the characteristic of mentorship. To be a mentor, the servant and transformational leader must demonstrate strong communication and listening skills, in order to articulate the vision and the mission of the organization, and to receive feedback from the followers; exemplify empathy to gain a better understanding of the feelings, and cultural perspectives of the followers; and motivate and empower followers to conceptualize how they are a vital part of the organization. Through this development of mentorship, the servant and transformational leader display a high level of commitment to the growth of their constituents; and in turn, followers support the leader through their productivity. In spite of the fact that the servant leader is a facilitator for supporters to accomplish a common vision; the transformational leader moves followers to share a vision (Smith, Montagno, Kuzmenko, 2004).…

While looking through the resources provided for this section it was interesting to see Bommelje quoting Robert Greenleaf, where he says a servant leader seeks first to serve, “then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.” That was very profound because if I look back at my career to where I am now, becoming a leader was a natural step. My desire to serve others moved me toward a leadership role, where I could be a mentor to others and a student to those that I respect and seek knowledge and mentorship. One thing I have discovered about myself is…
