The two human figures in the foreground frame the beach scene in the background. The elements of the painting are rather ordinary, as the focus of the painting is people relaxing at the beach. In fact, the painting is more like a family photo, rather than something to be shown at an exhibit (“National Gallery, London”). This is a modern concept, as most paintings historically had not depicted ordinary daily life.
The painting has elements of both the transitive and the eternal. The scene is certainly a moment in time, with the people in the foreground relaxing and figures in the background strolling along the beach. The immediacy of the painting is emphasized by the fact that it was painted on the beach instead of in a studio, a common but new practice for the Impressionists. This can be confirmed by the presence of sand mixed in with the paint (“National Gallery, London”). These transitive elements combine with the eternal nature of the beach landscape to create a picture of modernity.

Their poses are exaggeratedly relaxed. The attire of the man on the right suggests that he is in charge of the ballet, and may be making a profit off of it. The painting highlights the gap in status between the women and the men, a rather modern observation on Degas’ part.
The painting also has a contrast between the performers and the stage set. While the people are painted quite realistically, the set has an elusive quality to it. It is difficult to distinguish among the curtain, backdrop, and backstage of the theatre. This contrast between the people and the set has the effect of emphasizing the fact that the performers are real people, not just part of the performance. This is consistent with the Impressionist idea of depicting real, modern life.
These paintings of sights in the city, leisure, and work demonstrate that Impressionist paintings can be considered documents of Paris capital of modernity to a great extent. Their subjects, style, and juxtaposition of the transitive and the eternal give effective depictions of life in Paris at the time.
