These are two very important characteristics that we as maturing adults and college students need in order to take care of ourselves not only in college but in everyday life as well. New lancer day forces you to practice and perfect these important traits by giving you an agenda and making it your responsibility to follow it. Another important trait needed and used during New Lancer Days is citizen leadership. I believe Kami, our peer mentor is a perfect example of a citizen leader. She took the time out of her college schedule to become a peer mentor and teach us how to be good citizen leaders. Many of the presentations such as the bystander presentation and the soundtrack presentation speak about being a good citizen leader. In middle school, I found myself to be more quiet, shy, and less outspoken than my peers. I joined all the same clubs and had the same interests as my peers, such as student council and National Junior Honors Society, but my introverted personality kept me from exploring new leadership roles. As I finished middle school and began my high school career, I brought my introverted personality with me. As first semester progressed, I joined clubs in school that encouraged an open mind and voice, specifically Key Club International, the world's largest, student-led, community service organization. In Key Club, I met students with open minds and strong leadership qualities.…

I have been called the “mom” of the friend group, the “mother hen” that is always looking out for her chicks, prepped with bandaids, hand sanitizer, and an extra pencil for loaning. Link Crew took that characteristic I have always had and bolted, floating high into the sky like the helium balloon whose ribbon easily slipped through a tiny toddler’s fist. Through Link Crew training, I learned that you don’t have to be extroverted to be a great leader. Sometimes the best leaders are those who speak less and listen more, the ones who observe before they act, the ones who lead by example as well as instruction. Leading wide-eyed freshmen around an entirely new building and watching their expressions transform from nervousness and anxiety to excitement…

I expressed this by keeping the students focused, letting them engage in hands on experiments, and answering all their questions to help them get a better understanding of what was happening. These leadership skills helped me earn respect from each student. One of the ways I demonstrated leadership while presenting to the students was making sure they were focused on my presentation.…

To me a person who is a leader leads by example. Ever since I was in middle school I have tried to always do the right thing and guide my peers into a direction that is best for them. Since coming to Woodberry my Freshman year I feel as though I have grown stronger in this trait. One example that stands out particularly is when I was on the Bengal football team, and it was a scorching day early on in the year. It seemed as though everybody had a terrible day, and it was looking like we were having a horrible practice.…
