Christian Excellence vs. Success
What characteristics do Christian Excellence and Success have and in what ways do the two differ? Success. One word with so much meaning and room for interpretation. What are you successful at? What have you excelled at?
Are you a good mother?
A good friend?
A hard worker?
What about a good Christian? Too often I feel that we get caught up in the buzz of being successful that we forget the trivial details that got us there. We forget to remember the person that we once were and what they may think of the person that we are today. Christian Excellence is a strong word that too can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The first thing that comes to mind is commitment, dedication, trust, believing in something bigger than yourself. What about the attributes that they do not share? Success if very much more of an outside influence. It is a road that is driven by self-praise and self-motivation. Once can view success as a raise or a promotion, being the best at a job or task. Christian excellence on the other hand is much more intimate. There is a reason that we are not saying Christian success in this instance. Christian excellence is an inner feeling and motivator that requires little to no outside praise or recognition to be known. It comes from a connection that we need only within ourselves and the Lord. As a Christian we are to follow the life that the lord has laid out for us. We have one path to travel and one goal: God’s Kingdom and salvation. There are no outside factors, no judging from co-workers or family on what they feel we should be doing. There is no grade book that we are tied to or amount of money that we must make. We must live a faith based life in which we share the love of the Lord with those around us. This is the life of an excellent Christian. If we find salvation and claim a spot with our Lord, we are then a successful Christian as well. However, can it go the other way around. Picture with me that you are the owner of your own business, expanding branches daily and selling shares faster than you can acquire them. You are married, you have 2 wonderful children, you are wealthy, and have the home of your dreams, but you do not know the Lord. You may be deemed by society as a successful business person, but what else are we missing out on. What are your personal battles looking like? What are your fears? These are all things that set us up for failure from the top when it becomes too much to handle on our own. We never really have to be alone, we have the chance to be so much more than successful, we have the chance to be excellent. Don’t miss out on the opportunity because we let all the “mess” get in the way. Be more than a Christian and be more than excellent.
