The rhinoceros is probably best known for its striking resemblance to the dinosaurs of millennia back.
- The rhinoceros is one of the largest animals roaming the plains of the planet today, second only to the elephant. A mature rhino typically stands about 1.3 m high at the shoulder, weighs around 700 kg, though the largest individuals have been known to weigh as much as 1,000 kilograms.
- Rhinoceroses are universally recognized by their massive bodies, stumpy legs and their horns.
- They are renowned for having poor eyesight, but their senses of smell and hearing are well developed.
- There are five species and 11 subspecies of rhino; some have two horns, while others have one. The biggest of the five surviving species are Africa's white rhino and Asia's greater one-horned rhinos.

The answer is their horns, which are considered to be a valuable ingredient in some forms of Traditional Asian Medicine. There has also been an increase in demand for rhino horn in Vietnam where it is dubbed as a “hangover cure.” The rhino horn is ground into powder and the supposed “medicinal benefits” of rhino horn include the ability to cure gout, fever, headaches, anxiety, boils, nausea, food poisoning, and some Vietnamese even believe, cancer. As well as its use in medicine, rhino horn is bought and consumed purely as a symbol of wealth. Consequently, this high demand in Asian country leads to the exorbitantly high prices of these traditional medicines - rhinos horn. In countries with depressed economies, the promise of a potential is up to $300,000 wage per horn. East Asia, especifically Vietnam, is the largest market for rhino horns. By weight, rhino horns cost as much as gold on the black market.
