Qualities Of An Effective Counselor Essay

What is an effective counselor? I believe an effective counselor is a person who is educated and trained to help people to deal with personal, social, and psychological problems. A counselor must possesses the following characteristics to be effective in his or her work: Patience, good listener, nonjudgmental, authenticity, compassionate, encouraging, empathetic, researcher, self-awareness, and discrete.
The key words and images that I use in metaphor of counseling are soccer coach, director of symphony, life is a bowl of cherries, and prisoner in my home. The use of metaphor invoke images and emotions. Metaphor is a group of words used as a figure of speech to identify something as being the same as some unrelated thing to describe a person, place, or thing so that the expression can be better understood. Several items that are used as metaphorical items as therapeutic touchstones during counseling sessions are angel figurine, small ball, pen or pencil, button, balloon, and small sea shell. For example, the sea shell is a reminder of a peaceful and relaxing day on the beach.

I would provide a list of support groups and encourage the clients to visit the library to find other productive activities. Also, I would encourage the clients to offer to help others who are in need and offer them a listening ear. I would remind the clients to offer encouraging words to others that are depressed or feeling negative. One of the most influential ways to become good members of society is do not discriminate because others are different from them. I will encourage my clients to treat one another with respect and fairness. If my clients have some free time, they can join a club or organization to raise monies for charities to help others in
