“There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy’s life when he has the raging desire to go somewhere and dig for hidden treasure”(156). This desire had struck the heart of young boy in the town of St. Petersburg. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Tom a young boy goes on many adventures with his companions. Tom is a troublesome boy who lives with his Aunt Polly and his half- brother Sidney. Throughout the story the mischievous boy often gets into trouble and expresses his apathy for the many things that bore him. Many would argue that even after all his adventures, Tom does not mature as a person, but that is simply not the case. Tom is mature because of his actions towards Becky, Huck, and Injun Joe. From the beginning of the story, Tom showed a particular interest in Becky, and on many occasions he showed he cared for her. As the story progresses Tom performs multiple actions to earn her affection. One of the first instances where Tom displays his love for her was when they were attending school. Race has been and always will be a subject that will have different opinions and ideas about it. Mark Twain uses his novel “Pudd’nhead Wilson” to express his thoughts on race in a variety of ways. There are some plausible reasons to believe that Twain thinks blood essentially defines a character. However, it seems as if he states these in a joking matter in many cases. Also, the idea of nature versus nurture is a key factor in identifying the views Mark Twain has on race and it seems to outweigh any thought that can point towards race being able to define character.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee characterizes Tom Robinson as a man who demonstrates the truth that harming something or someone who does no harm to society is wrong. Lee compares Robinson to a mockingbird in that both Tom and the the mockingbird both do no harm to society. Rather, these “mockingbirds” help people in whatever way they can. Whether it be busting up a chiffarobe or singing a beautiful song on a quiet Sunday afternoon, killing a so-called “mockingbird” is most definitely a sin.
