Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley was published in 2012.
This story takes place in the town Lily Arkansas. Cullen, (the main character) faces many depressing hardships. He constantly talks about the fact that no one ever leaves Lily Arkansas. For example Cullen states, “most of those people are complete ass-hats who tried and subsequently failed to leave this place behind.” (chapter 1 page 10) The main event in the book is Gabriele, (Cullen's brother) goes missing. This has a huge impact on Cullen and his family. They are all distraught over Gabrielle going missing. Cullen towards the end of the book says many times he just wants things to be back to normal. Lucas (Cullen’s best friend) notices this and speaks as if Gabrielle

The landscape is plain and the weather is mild. Cullen usually does nothing exciting here. He says it is in between Memphis and Little Rock which he rarely visits. Him and Lucas sometimes drive around but there is not much more to it. An important character to the setting is Ada taylor. She is known as the “hottest” girl in Lily, and even kids in memphis and little rock know of her. Another character is Lucas. He is very popular. Lucas tries to make everyone happy, he gets along with anyone especially Cullen. The overall social setting of the other kids seems normal for high school. The pretty girl, the popular guy, the jocks, and the kids like Cullen who are quiet and …show more content…
The majority of the events seem negative but they are done out of love. Cullen talks about loving Ada how many people would die to have the chance just to love her, “The unspoken philosophy of all those in love with Ada was something like this: If I have to die to get that, then death it is.” (1.16) It is just like when Cabot kidnaps Gabriele, it was out of blind love for Alma. And it was Lucas’s love for Cullen that he supported him and helped him through his hardship. Love in this book is portrayed in many different ways. My favorite part of the story was the ending when Gabriele returns. This is my favorite section of the story because it is somewhat happy unlike most of the book. Lucas Cader was my favorite character. He was positive, popular, but he also gave everyone a chance which is unique. I did not like the fact that the therapist was constantly brought up but it never finished with him. The book overall seemed to have left many doors open. Overall this was a good read. I would rate the book ⅘ stars because it had great literature but it was sad and did not finish some points or finished them in a displeasing way. It was interesting about how in such a depressing town love was a huge factor to everything, even though it does not seem like it. From the book I can see that everything may not always be negative as it seems, and that sometimes we just need

This is my review on the book Shattered Lives; This book was written by Camila Batmanghelidjh the founder of Kids Company; the registered charity was founded in 1996 with the aim to provide support to deprived inner city children. The author was born into wealthy family in Iran and arrived in England aged twelve where she attended private school. The book is sectioned into ten chapters, with an introduction and appendix at the end explaining who is who in the therapy world, and a guide to substance misuse. The book consists of several letters written to victims of abuse, which seem to be in the form of apologies to children who have been let down by the system.…

Even in secluded areas of the world, people still crave human interaction and long to find somewhere they belong. When the quota for meaningful relationships isn’t met, the isolation can either stifle a person’s potential or force them to make meaningful connections. In literature, small towns are often synonymous with murmurs of gossip and loneliness; Plainsong by Kent Haruf is no different. The environment Haruf places his characters in shapes their personalities and situations implicitly. With fewer individuals to interact with, the setting forces characters to either accept their lack of valuable interactions or seek out others whose companionship is more impactful.…

Favorite parts: My favorite parts were actually Clay’s narrative. I found it unique, from a storytelling perspective, to have Hannah’s story portrayed in the context of Clay’s. Sometimes, it would seem that the lines would blur about whose story this actually was; in the end it is Clay’s. Clay becomes so engulfed in Hannah’s story, this girl that he had an emotional attachment to, who is now gone. The prime example of Clay’s immersion in Hannah’s world comes when Clay is at Monet’s, a favorite hangout place of Hannah’s.…

Plot: The exposition of this book is rather unique, because instead of taking place solely in one spot, it was scattered throughout the book. The beginning introduces the main conflict –who owns the key –but not who the characters are as people. It takes a majority of the book for the reader to understand the characters. Foer decided to write the book like this to make it more like reality. It takes a long time to really get to know another person, and by withholding information about the characters he displays this.…

The novel Shatter Me written by Tahereh Mafi is foremost one of the best books that I have ever read in my existence. This amazing novel was really unpredictable as everything happened like a rollercoaster ride. However, it did have some drops throughout the book that I did not find amusing. The three main things that I personally adored about this novel was the idea, characters, and writing style. I really liked the idea of this novel as it was really eventful.…

The first thing that challenges Dan's views of the world stems from his relationship with his parents. From watching his sweet mother who loved to sing and bake scones to then watching his angry father harming the animals around him and hurting peoples feelings. Although the text doesn't say why his mother left it infers that it could be because of his father. The reader knows that Dan's mother Mary loved him and understands from her letter that she had "no choice but to leave... [the boys]" as they are "[her] pride and joy".…

***********************SPOILER ALERT************************************* I am legitimately at a loss for words. Before I talk about what a great experience reading this book was I definitely have to address the elephant in the room: the ending. It means exactly what it says pretty much, it is the psychological behavior in which people can forget unwanted memories unconsciously.…

The story Victory Lap by George Saunders is ambiguous and has many unexpected twists. Through the characters’ thoughts, it is revealed that who they appear to be isn’t always who they turn out to be. The story starts off slightly confusing, as it begins in the mind of Alison Pope. The first few paragraphs suggest that the story is about a young girl pretending to be a princess, until her thoughts change to her dance recital, then to her family, and many other things. It then becomes clear that Alison Pope is a young, teenage girl who has a lot of thoughts running through her head at any moment in the day.…
