Due to Dimmesdale's guilty conscience he becomes ill, but it is not a physical illness it is a mental and spiritual illness. Chillingworth said about Dimmesdale's illness ¨A bodily disease, which we look upon as a whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part¨ (Hawthorne 150). Pearl, the daughter of Dimmesdale says that she thinks Satan has gotten a hold of Dimmesdale and that is why Dimmesdale is ill. Chillingsworth one day finds Dimmesdale in a deep slumber and finds something mysterious about him. Chillingsworth place his had on Dimmesdale´s bosom while he was sleeping and found something that made him horrified, ¨But what distinguished the physician´s ecstasy from Satan's was the trait of wonder in it.¨(Hawthorne 153). Chillingsworth found the letter A on Dimmesdale's bosom symbolizing adultery, which is the same thing that Hester has on her bosom. Chillingsworth is very horrified from this news and wants to seek revenge on Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale was inside the church doing his sermon while Pearl and Hester where outside standing on the scaffold being humiliated and Dimmesdale was being praised. Dimmesdale realized that it was time to confess he revealed the letter A on his chest in front of many people. He never exactly said that he was the one that Hester had Pearl with but many people could just put the pieces together. Due to him exposing his chest he soon started to die right there and then before he died Pearl finally accepted him as a father and gave him a kiss. Pearl accepted him because he confessed and finally stood up for them and showed that he actually cares about them in public. Hester was upset because that night they planned on finally moving and starting their life together, but now that Dimmesdale died because of his sin they can never become the family they always wanted to become. Once Dimmesdale is gone some people think that he was lying about his sin and he only did it to prove a point that everyone sins and all you need to do is ask God to forgive you, other people were disgraced from this news and started losing faith because Dimmesdale was a pastor yet sinned the worst. Once Hester then died, Dimmesdale and Hester had their graves put next to each other but people purposely put their graves just the right distance apart so that their souls could not intermingle in the after life.
