There are moments when the male lead Dong Chul comes to Se-jin’s rescue but I would not necessarily call this movie a “hero” film. Ahjussi was very clearly a hero film. There was a conflict and one man single handedly saves the day. There was a classical hero story structure in that film Whereas My Gangster Like Lover, follows the hero dynamic slightly but it does dominate most of the film’s elements like it does in Ahjussi. In the end of the movie is when Dong-chul does what I consider to be the most heroic act and that is stalling her interview so she can make it there on time. However the movie’s plot does not necessarily surround itself around Dong-chul being Se-jin’s hero. The stakes for Tae-sik are quite high and he is putting his life on the line to save Somi which is a very heroic task. He undergoes a very dangerous journey and is faced with death every time he fights someone. Dong-chul’s heroic feats are not on the same scale as Tae-sik’s but they are do some degree heroic. From running to get Se-jin an umbrella, beating up an employer that wanted to take advantage of her, to stalling her interview, he’s form of heroism was different but nonetheless heroic. I would say that Ahjussi is the better hero film.
If I had to think of things to fix, about the movie Ahjussi, I honestly don’t think I could find one. I personally find this to be
