Things They Carried Analysis

This chapter really interested me. When thinking of soldiers marching through enemies land, a person might habitually think of the ammunition, food, personal belongings, what each personnel carries on each mission. For example on page 5, the author states, “As a medic, Rat Kiley carried a canvas satchel filled with morphine and plasma and malaria tablets and surgical tape and comic books and all things a medic must carry…” What is least on the persons mind is the non-war type materials the soldiers carried; one soldier carried a bible, one carried his girlfriend’s panty hose around his neck, some soldiers even carried stationary. O’Brien talks about how the soldiers even carried the land on their bodies, something that probably didn’t even …show more content…
The two characters Jimmy Cross and the narrator drinking coffee and talking of the past. They talked about Jimmy Cross’s love interest Martha. He explains how he burned the original picture of her and received a new one. He talks about how they ran into each other after the war. She said that she had not been married and never would. The reader might assume from Martha’s actions that she was leading Cross on because “there was no pressure in return” when he took her by the hand and then walked away as he said that he would still always love her. My opinion on the matter was that in the previous chapter, it explains how Martha is a virgin. I believe that since she was a virgin she didn’t like affection or maybe felt uncomfortable with this affection, especially when Cross told her that he would always love her. She might also just be leading him on like it is assumed. However, she still gave him another picture and told him not to burn it this time. Spin is a chapter that goes back to talking about the war. The reader can see more contradiction in the chapter. After saying that war can sometimes be sweet, it gives a story of how a little boy with one leg asked for chocolate. This is contradicting because the characters say that his leg got blown off in the war. I don’t see how that can be considered sweet. Another “sweet” situation told was how character

The first chapter that could be applied to The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien from How To Read Like A Professor by Thomas C. Foster would be Chapter 11: … More Than It’s Gonna Hurt You: Concerning Violence. For the most part, violence and death are everywhere in The Things They Carried. Explosions, gun shots, open wounds, all in a typical war setting that was fought by people who did not even need to be in the war. “By daylight they took sniper fire, at night they were mortared, but it was not a battle, it was just an endless march, village to village, without purpose, nothing won or lost (page 15).”…

Synthesis Essay The novel “The Things They Carried” written by Tim O’Brien is a simple yet intriguing story about the items a troop of soldiers carried while stationed in Vietnam. Tim O’brien makes sure the story circles and centers around the horrible conditions of Vietnam. He also puts a voice in his writing so it seems like this topic was very difficult to write about. Throughout the story, O’brien seems to gain trust and courage in his writing and in his audience of young adults.. “The Things They Carried” describes the Vietnam experience and focuses on and prepares O’brien to discuss emotional issues and not just physical or environmental.…

He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something that he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war”, (16). A theme that I had noticed in Chapter 1 was that past experiences of war completely change a person. This passage was an example of the theme because Cross was caring, but after Lavender was killed he decided that he needed to be more…

Informal 4 In the first story, “The Things They Carried,” there was an abundance of repetition. O’Brien consistently mentions different weights and things the men carry around with him throughout the war. O’Brien says, “In addition to the three standard weapons—the M-60, M-16, and M-79—they carried whatever presented itself, or whatever seemed appropriate as a means of killing or staying alive (7).” This is only one example of the many things the men had to carry.…

I believe Cross wrote this novel for some type of closure to the life he lived. He wanted to take the world through the things he experienced so that we could visually understand what all he went through. While writing this book he returned back to the intermediate setting of the Vietnam War. Also, if you have noticed Cross speaks in third party as he is telling this story, to really put himself right in the middle of his own book. Cross really wanted his readers to feel the pain he was going through with Martha.…

However, the technology, geographical features, and the politics of the two wars have several differences. There are similarities between Vietnam and Iraq:…

Lieutenant Cross demonstrates that Martha is his mental escape when “he [wonders] what her truest feelings [are], exactly, and what she [means] by separate-but-together” (O’Brien 8). Additionally, Martha, Mary Anne, and Kathleen are very young and not fully experienced in life, as they are immature. The men, however, are at war and it forces them to mature rapidly; therefore, they cannot relate to the women as they have a characteristic that the men are not able to fully understand. Lieutenant Cross describes his beloved Martha’s…

Jimmy Cross was sent a pebble from Martha along with letters. Here from these tangible objects he began to let his mind wander, having difficulty paying "attention to the war. The book “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’Brien is based on multiple short stories all referring to his time during the Vietnam War. The author wanted the reader to perceive his memories from the war and to feel all the emotions that was associated with the word “war”. He described it as: death, love, mystery, adventure, terror, pity, despair, discovery, and longing; All of which I felt and detected while reading the authors short stories. The author also goes on about his stories and makes you consider the question, “What is the purpose of war?”…
