The father, a poor woodcutter sighed and uttered to his wife, “What is to become of us? How can we feed our children when we have nothing for ourselves?”
“I’ll tell you what husband,” answered his wife, “in the early morning, we shall take our children and leave them in the forest where it is thickest. We shall light a fire for them, give them our last piece of bread and leave them alone. They will not find their way back home again, and we shall be rid of them.” …show more content…
We are going to the forest now, hurry along.” She gave them each a slice of bread and hastily said, “This is for your dinner. Do not eat it up before then, as this is all you will receive.”
So all four of them trudged through the forest. Hansel, who was smarter than what his parents thought he’d be, released a pebble for every five steps he took. When they reached their destination, their father said, “I will gather some wood and light a fire that will keep you warm.”
The brushwood was burning a bright flame, soaring in the air when the stepmother remarked, “Now children, we must go. Stay together and we will summon you when we are done chopping wood.”
Off went the parents into the woods to work. Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire throughout noon, listening to birds chirping and squirrels squeaking their way through the forest. Late in the evening, they heard an unusual rattling noise that was coming from the bush. Hansel declared, “Gretel, I am going to see what that is. Please stay here until father comes back.”
Gretel who sobbed uncontrollably replied, “Hansel, please don’t leave me. I have to come with you.”
Hansel comforted his little sister and said, “Do not worry. Papa will come for us. If not we will find our way back home when the moon
