China’s criminal justice system is only 20 years old, and has faced many changes throughout the years. The system has high confession rates, and penalties that result in imprisonment without a trial. Criminal suspects have no right to refuse interrogation, enjoy no presumption of innocence, and have no right to confront their accusers or compel the presence of witnesses to testify in their defense (Belkin, n.d., pg.61). The Chinese government are working toward a criminal justice system that allows fairness to all parties involved.
