In my life, I have experienced many challenges. One of those challenges was to sustain myself with a job. It caused several realizations in me. First, is that humans will do anything to survive. Second, is that no matter what class you are born in, you will always find struggle, and must work to get past that struggle. Third, and finally, is that no matter how hard you try, some people are always going to be better than you. Getting a job and working has taught me many things that no one else would, and it means so much to my character, that I wouldn’t be who I am without it. Have humans really evolved completely from the primates we used to be? In some ways yes, and other ways no. All animals have this “fight or flight” instinct, and when they are cornered and have nowhere else to run, they will fight back and do anything in there power to escape. Humans have a similar form of mindset, that has been imbedded in our DNA from ancient times. When a man is penniless and broke, and has nothing of value to his name, what does he do? It has always been this unspoken rule in the world. Since I got my job, I’ve noticed that even if you are born into the wealthiest family, or the poorest, you will find some sort of struggle. That struggle can be things ranging from the lack of money, or severe depression. I have suffered from depression for a long time, and I was born into an upper middle class. I have also seen multiple coworkers suffer from the lack of funds their family has. One person I work with had to work full-time to sustain his family, even though he had school to attend. It made me realize that no matter where you come from, or what background you receive, you will never be able to not experience the struggle of money, or mental illness. In life, struggle is something you will never be able to outrun, and getting a job and finally working, has taught me that

My mother always stressed to me that there were two types of people in the world; those who sit back and deal with what life throws their way, and those who go out and get what they want at all cost. I am the latter. As the daughter of a single teen mom, I have endured my share of triumphs and misfortunes. Growing up in a dead-end and poverty-stricken community known, ironically, as Rich Square, North Carolina, with a population of about 900, I am no stranger to disparities. I can vividly remember sleeping without heat in the coldest of winters and going to school on the first day without any of the name brand clothing that my friends would own, but in the midst of all that encompassed my home life, I persevered.…

The reading, “Stupidity ‘Deconstructed,’” was an eye-opener to me, because it offered me an understanding to a topic that I’m familiar with but can’t quite grasp. Kati, the author, talked about how stupidity is synonymous with the working class in this society. Kati realized that the working class, herself included, are not stupid. Stupid vs smart was concept created by the middle- and upper class to keep a certain elite-ness to themselves, to create exclusivity. Kati went to the extend of looking up and defined the word stupid in her essay.…

Each person comes from a different background, whether it be into a wealthy family or impoverished one. However, the fairness in life is that every single person has opportunities throughout their journey, and it is up to them to grab ahold of them. Many people would believe that life has not been fair to them only because they have not succeeded, yet it is their fault for not making use of opportunities handed to them. As stated in Life’s not Fair - Deal With it! by Mike Myatt, “People have overcome...virtually every challenge known to man.”…

In this paper I want to discuss education as a social institution and how it defines gender, shapes race and ethnicity, and divides social class of the individuals within it. Education as a social institution is important in our society because the school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socializing with their teachers and peers. Through socialization, students are able to recognize where they fit-in, in terms of genders, races and ethnicities, and social classes.…
