Reading is not genuinely reading if a student does not understand what he or she has read. Numerous battling student readers can perceive and claim words from print, but cannot comprehend or answer questions about what they have just read. Because of their lack of reading comprehension many of the fail crucial test and in turn either have to take the test next year or loss an opportunity of getting their diplomas there twelfth year. Students need to improve their reading comprehension so that they can get their high school diplomas. “Today’s scores mean that 50% of the sophomore class is at risk of being denied a high school diploma and a chance for a brighter future.”(Jordan, Half Of 9th And 10th Graders Failed FCAT) They can use these three strategies to improve reading comprehension: before reading taps into what they so far recognize about the information, during a reader should commentate and draw a visual diagram of what they read, lastly after reading students should summarize accurately and talk about the content; the students will do better on their reading project and it will reflect in their tests. There is still much to be researched in the reading comprehension field; for example, why are high school students’ reading books that are for fifth graders? Also, by reading books inappropriate for their grade level dose that affect their reading comprehension? The reason I think this topic needs to be research is because reading books that are for fifth graders when you are in grades tenth through twelfth in theory, would not seem to benefit reading comprehension levels.
