Reflective Essay: The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins

Before English 1157, I wanted to cry at the thought of writing an essay. I had always considered myself to be a horrible writer and I just had to accept the fact that I would never be good at it. Instead of being taught how I could improve my essays in high school, the teachers were only worried about the 5-paragraph essay format. With that being said, Dr. Rutledge mentioned how he hated that format and would give us an F if we used it. Terrified, I thought to myself “All I have ever learned was this format, how am I going to pass this class?”. There were many challenges I went through throughout the semester. One of the challenges I found very difficult was writing an introduction because I wasn’t sure how to properly introduce a topic. Another challenge was that I didn’t know how to create a hook interesting enough to get the reader wanting more. An example of this is my first essay in which I wrote, “The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an extraordinary book filled with constant suspense.”. I still struggle with coming up with interesting hooks and introducing my topic, however I have shown progress within each essay.
One strength that I have when it comes to the writing process is that I’m great at brainstorming. However, before this class I had struggled with trying to organize my thoughts. Often my paragraphs would contain

My first draft was covered with “Why?” written by almost every paragraph. For example, I wrote, “If you look at books and get overwhelmed, this is one book that can definitely change your outlook on books”, however I completely lacked explaining why the book can change someone’s outlook. This was a weakness of mine when it came to writing. I wasn’t explaining my point thoroughly throughout my essay, but for the final draft I had made my main point clear. I had improved drastically from my first draft to my final draft for this
