She lives in the depths of the lake so it takes Beowulf many hours to swim down and on his way he encounters many sea monsters that he must battle. When he gets to the bottom, Grendel 's mother approaches him and tries to crush him with her arms but luckily Beowulf’s armor prevented an early end to the fight. After Beowulf escapes the constraints of the mother, he takes a swing at her but even his enchanted sword is no match for her, almost like the fight with the the dragon. After he realizes that she is able to fight back with just as much force, he looks to the sword on the wall. The sword is fit for a giant and is not fit for any average human but Beowulf had the power of thirty men in each hand and he is able to behead Grendel 's mother. In all three stories, the blades used by Beowulf all fail and he always has to find alternate ways to fight. The story differs from the fight with her son because Grendel was caught in the act killing people versus when he fights Grendel 's mother, Beowulf goes to her to wreak mayhem. In the battle Beowulf versus Grendel, Beowulf has a home court advantage this can help as he knows the area better and also has more resources and has soldiers to help defeat Grendel. When Beowulf goes to fight Grendel’s mother he is in an unknown area fighting with no back up making it hard to kill
