If a family falls in the middle to upper class they will be able to send their kid to a private high school, or will have their kid attend a well-known public school. Otherwise a family that falls into the category of poor they won’t be able to send their kid to very a good school. When a family is poor they end up living on the poor part of town which coincides with them going to a poor school. Kids who attend poor schools are taught by teachers who are themselves who don’t have the qualifications of teachers at better schools. The way teachers teach a student can be effected by a student’s wealth. An example of this takes place in “Learning in the Shadow of Race and Class,” written by bell hooks, a well-known author. Hooks, states that “Elite [teachers], they were only interested in teaching elite [students]. Poor folks with no background to speak of, were invisible” (293). This quote shows that good wealthy teachers only want to teach the highest wealth class of students. In the movie Coach Carter, the kids at Richmond High School come from poor families. One instance that the movie hits they are poor is when Kenyon and his girlfriend are pregnant, and they don’t know how they will able to support the kid. Kenyon doesn’t know whether he should keep focusing on school or decide to dropout and support the family. This is a problem that takes place in a lot …show more content…
Coach Carter shows the negative impact schools have on their students. At the beginning of Coach Carter there are many scenes that show the schools lack of interest in their student’s academics. One scene that takes place is where the principal of the school tells Mr. Carter that the only thing that should matter to his students is basketball. So the principal of the school is not interested in having her students be successful in the classroom showing that the school district does not take enough interest in academics. Another important scene that shows the schools view on academics is when Mr. Carter tells his players the facts on how many kids actually graduate from Richmond. Only around fifty percent of the students at Richmond graduate. Schools that graduate only half of their students should realize that they need to do more to help their students achieve. Many instances have happened in the actual world that some schools do not care about their students. One case where one instance of this happening took place is in Minnesota. The teachers of some Minnesota school districts did not feel that they were receiving enough money so they went on strike. These teachers felt they had a good reason to go on strike, but this had a huge negative effect on students. During the strike students could not go to school which meant they were
