Question # 2 The “Centrality of the State” is important in understanding Third World countries. This essay will look at the meaning and implication of the “centrality of the state”, what modernization is and its imperatives and the impact of the imperatives on the political development of Third World Countries. To begin, the “centrality of the state” is the idea of who holds the power in a country. The person that holds the power is trying to keep this power from the new elites in the country. This occurs due to the colonial power leaving the country and handing the power to some people there in order to allow them to control the citizens. These people become the government. The government’s main feature is to meet the demands of the people. …show more content…
This led to no constitution being made in order to do this. The second implication is that the government is not accountable. An example of this is when someone robbed a bank and the police that arrested the person had to ask higher up people and it eventually landed up to the prime minister and he called his wife. This example connects into the third implication. The third implication is that the government is ineffective. The fourth and fifth implications connect into each other. The forth implication is that there is no democratic election in which there is no competition. This connects well into the fifth implication in which the elections need competition and there is none due to there being no competing …show more content…
The first impact is the way that the children are brought up. In Third World countries, children are brought up not to challenge their parents or anyone with authority. In First World countries, children are told to question things around them which will challenge their authority figures. This difference is shown when children in Third World countries move to other countries in order to get better educational opportunities. For example, the example given in class when the student counted his exam and was supposed to receive 19 out of 25 but it was marked down as 18 out of 25 instead. When this was brought up to the professor, the professor questioned why the student did not bring it to him right away. The reason for the student not bringing this up was due to him being taught not to challenge the authority
