The Center for Disease control has estimated that 78.6 million adults in the United States are obese or over weight that is more than 1/3 of the U. S population (CDC). It is impossible to ignore the impact obesity has had on healthcare it contributes to most diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some types of cancer, maintaining proper weight can all for partial prevention of these diseases. Obesity meets all the medical criteria for it be considered as a medical disease, it has a know etiology, has signs and symptoms, and causes functional changes leading to pathology (CDC). There are multiple etiologies for obesity it could be due to family history, lack of physical activity, diet, ethnicity, or lack of healthier food options. Obesity has become an epidemic and controlling this epidemic is a major responsibility of the public health departments. New polices and preventive measure must be implemented to control obesity epidemic.
We live in an era of super size me with multiple fast food restaurants at every corner and less access to healthier options. Report indicated that more than one-third of the American populations consume food outside of their homes and that 30% of the individual’s weekly calories intake is from eating outside (Menu).
