Introduction This paper discusses the causes, effects, prevention, and recommendation for workplace violence. “Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide.” (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, n.d.) Workplace violence has accounted for many violent encounters faced in the business world. This can be led on by numerous factors. In certain situations, many people fail to communicate effectively with others and even make a report whenever a problem arises and instead wait until the issue has gotten out-of-control and emotions are displayed in either public or private settings. Miscommunication is a big factor for many violent altercations. When someone feels as if they are either disrespected, insulted, or wasted time. If a message is not conveyed effectively and clear, then it leaves room for misinterpretation.
Stress is another leading factor of violent altercations. Whenever someone faces stress and chooses not to deal with it or they handle stress in a wrong way, then emotions are directed in the wrong way and towards the wrong set of people. Oftentimes conflicts are not solved in a respectable manner, but instead it may be passed on to others who then interpret the situations in their own terms and begin to start rumors.
