After his death, Trayvon was “ placed on trial for his own murder and the killer, George Zimmerman, was not held accountable for the crime he committed” (Garza). This was the immediate cause of the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement, created by Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors. Although the Zimmerman trials were an immediate cause of the movement, the movement does not only stand to bring awareness to the death of Blacks by police and others in power. It is a noble yet ignorant thought to believe by simply disregarding ethnicity our nation will join together. What the BLM movement is trying to get across is that we are not a nation joined together and that Black lives are the lives in trouble, Alicia Garza, leader of the movement states they are “working for the validity of Black lives”(Garza). Using religion to juxtapose the oppression Blacks feel dates back to the times of slavery. “White slave owners would use the Bible as justification for holding slaves.” (Taylor) Today, as a country, we believe we share a land of opportunity, where everyone is offered an equal chance to reach the American Dream. Can this ideal, so commonly believed, be true when our people feel the same oppression as when they were literally held under chain and whip? Of course not, there is no simple solution or one opinion that is better than the other. In truth all life does matter, and there is evidence to prove the Black community is in trouble in their own home. What the Black Lives Matter movement is striving for is a fair chance and for their voice to be heard. They represent everyone from the Black community, queers, seniors, adolescents, and the disabled. They are asking for acknowledgment the judicial system and the State are not treating the Black community with the same justice that is served in the White community. As a nation we have come far from the days where Frederick Douglass spoke of slavery, however, there are still instances that remain similar. There are still those that use religion as a shield to undermine the dehumanization the Black community feels. There are still murders by those in power on Blacks who have not committed a crime that are left with a dead black man and a free white man. Although it is a stretch to say there is still white supremacy, our nation is far from colorblind and this is what the Black Lives Matter movement wants to
