For quite a long time alcohol had been the leading cause of car accidents, but that began to change throughout the years as technology began to increase. As a consequence of the rise of technology distractions for drivers began to increase due to one type of technology in specific the cell phone which led to people using a cell phone while driving.
Texting and driving has become very common in today’s modern society because now everyone is too connected to technology. Societies around the world are beginning to get too attached to material things such as a cell phone which people are not capable to leave for just a small period of time. On the other hand, studies have revealed that drivers are not capable of multi-tasking as they believe they are. Researchers like David Hasansky have discovered that drivers who text while driving take their eyes of the road 100 time more compared to those who do not message on the road. Careless drivers put at risk many lives of innocent people who are just walking through the streets or of those who do follow the rules and do not text and drive. Many lives of persons have been destroyed by careless drivers. A journal done by Nathan Seppa reveals that people do this because they are so addicted to technology that they just cannot stop using it.
When a driver looks down at their phone to read a text message, they also take their eyes off the road. When a person performs this type of act of texting and driving they run the risk of having or causing an accident. As a result of texting and driving there has been an estimate of 1.6 million crashes each year in the United States caused by distracted drivers. The study also established that people that did not concentrate on a certain task tend to miss the obvious things like people crossing the road. One behavior that a concentrated driver needs to have is the ability of the metacognitive awareness which provides a person with the capability to get out of difficult situations. There are many studies that demonstrate that texting while driving is dangerous for all but a 2006 investigation presented that young and novice driver were more likely to use the cellphone while driving.
