In The Crucible there are many factors that lead to the start of the witch trials, one of the main things was the imperfection of mankind/ human flaws which was a huge theme showed consistently throughout the book. The people of Salem held many flaws some being greedy, lying for their own good, and fear. The whole town of Salem was a greedy community and this was really shown through with Reverand Parris. Many characters in The Crucible also exhibited the flaw of lying for their own good, but one of the main people that started this trend in the book and consistently carried it through was Abigail. One other main character flaw showed throughout the book was fear, fear played a huge role in everyone's lives in Salem, Fear of being accused, of being killed, of losing someone they loved, and someone who showed this well throughout the book was John proctor. Greed: the intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food. Greed was a huge cause and effect of the witch trials. Greed consumed everyone's life in Salem. Everyone always wanted something more than what they had, and they didn’t care who they took down in the process. Reverend Parris is a good example of this greed. Reverend Parris did not care who took down or got killed as long as his name wasn’t soiled and he still had power. The Reverend lists off about every excuse possible in the book for his behaviour, but he never denies accusations thrown at him. Some examples of Parris's greed include him quibbling over firewood, insisting on golden candlesticks for the church which are completely unnecessary and not needed the money could be going into something usual for everyone of salem instead of making sure the church he works in looks all pretty and fancy, and he also demanded that he have the deed to the house he lives in which was against time honored tradition, but he felt for some reason that he was special and deserved the best of treatments almost a royal like treatment. Reverend Parris was very greedy over money and property in which he felt entitled to and he showed this consistently throughout the book, he thought he was more valuable than the rest of people of Salem which is completely unacceptable especially for the reverend to display because people look up to him and if he’s exhibiting this behaviour he is showing that it is okay to act like that. Johns biggest fear was his name being blackened/ his reputation being ruined. This display of fear started at the beginning of the book starting with him lying and trying to cover up what he did with Abigail he thought if he just said it did not happen he could erase it happening, he thought if he lied enough about it, then it was almost like it never happened which is not how things work at all, another example was him saying he committed adultery and that he committed sins but he would not let the paper he signed be hung up.
