The syndrome I chose is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS); I chose this syndrome because it hits close to home. When my aunt found out she couldn’t have her own children, she decided she would adopt. Soon, she was told that there was a young boy who was three years old who was ready to be adopted… the only downfall was that he had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Knowing that he had FAS, she still adopted him. At first no one knew that anything was different with him, but the symptoms started to show as he got older. Sometimes the symptoms and characteristics of an individual with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are delayed in showing up – they will show up later in the child’s life. Drinking alcohol during a pregnancy can cause a woman’s baby to be born with birth defects and developmental disabilities. Alcohol is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States “as cited in KidsHealth Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (2016).” From a young age, I have always been told that you’re not supposed to drink alcohol while pregnant. However, I never really knew why until I started looking into it.

However, some of the physical characteristics can be passed along from mother to child. The disease itself though, will not be passed down. As long as a woman does not drink while pregnant, her child will not be born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I also discovered that a woman can have two children, one can have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the other couldn’t. It just depends if a mother consumes alcohol during pregnancy or not. If you drink while pregnant and your child is born without Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is important to not chance the next pregnancy. However, if you have a child born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is important that if you drink with your next pregnancy to get the baby checked for
