A smoker is not just a person who smokes a couple of cigarettes but it is also their lifestyle. It is addictive, and along with health risks, cigarette smoking will shorten one’s life and kill individuals. The American Lung Association states, “Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths in the U.S each year.” Second hand smoking are included with these 480,000 deaths, especially in young individuals. On average, every cigarette smoked takes away eleven minutes of a person’s life. In the U.S, more than 1,300 people die everyday due to cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking is the biggest health problem in America today because it causes many diseases and illnesses, it leads to prematurity and birth defects, and it contains toxic chemicals.
Cigarette smoking causes different types of diseases and illnesses. Smoking cigarettes harms nearly every organ in one’s body including the heart and skin. Other organs include: lungs, eyes, kidneys, and the uterus. “It causes about 90% of all

The Calorie Control Council argues, “Over the fifteen year period, obesity has overtaken smoking. Smoking has decreased by 18.5 percent whereas the proportion of the population that was obese increased by 85 percent.” To elaborate, studies showed obesity has a higher mortality risk than smoking since 2008. Critics have a valid point about obesity overtaking smoking because it causes loss of years in life due to this condition. However, Calorie Control Council misses the point that smoking is the leading cause of annual deaths in America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states “Smoking leads with more than 140,000 deaths annually.” Obesity comes after smoking for the biggest health problem in America.
