Antarctica Earthquake Causes

The news station is going insane, people are screaming, buildings are being torn apart, tsunamis, volcanos, and avalanches are occurring, what on earth is going on? An earthquake is officially happening and it is beginning to demolish everything above Earth 's surface. The earliest ever recorded evidence of an earthquake occurred in the Shandong province of China in 1831 B.C. ("Earthquake Facts"). It is said that Aristotle stated that soft ground shakes more than hard rock in an earthquake in 350 B.C. ("Earthquake Facts"). The interior of Antarctica has ice quakes, but occur within the ice sheet, instead of the land beneath the ice ("Earthquake Facts"). John Michell, a British engineer, was the first person to correctly state the cause of an …show more content…
An earthquake 's intensity is how dangerous and severe the earthquake 's shaking is (Rose 48). An earthquake has an intensity that can range from one to twelve. (Science Daily). Earthquakes with a magnitude of three or lower are ones that are hard to notice (Science Daily). When the intensity is a one, the shaking is not felt by people, but can be recorded (Rose 48). When the shaking of an earthquake is at two, people at rest living in the upper floors notice it and suspended objects may begin to swing (Rose 48). At an intensity of three, people indoors can feel the vibration, but may not recognize it as an earthquake and hanging objects begin to swing (Rose 48). Damages usually occur once the earthquake has reached a magnitude above four or five ("Earthquake Effects & Experiences"). When an earthquake has an intensity of four, the vibration is like a truck hitting a building; cars rock, dishes rattle, and wooden walls creak (Rose 48). At the intensity of five, it can be felt outdoors, small objects are knocked over and door swing open and close (Rose 48). When the intensity is a six, it is felt by all; people walk unsteadily, windows and dishes break, and pictures fall off walls (Rose

Studies of past subduction earthquakes are inexact things, based on finding their geologic signs: sudden changes of elevation that drown coastal forests, disturbances in ancient tree rings, buried beds of beach sand washed far inland and so on. Twenty-five years of research has determined that Big Ones affect Cascadia, or large parts of it, every few centuries. Times between events range from 200 to about 1000 years, and the average is around 500 years. The most recent Big One is rather well dated, although no one in Cascadia at the time could write. It occurred around 9 p.m. on 26 January 1700.…

The depth of the slip of the San Andreas earthquake was most likely even larger measuring from anywhere between 24-28 feet (USGS, n.d.). Due to the advancements of knowledge of earthquakes now the known magnitude of this earthquake varies between studies. It is noted at the lowest as 7.7 and the highest based off the Richter scale as 8.3, but since the Richter magnitude scale was developed for local earthquakes that were recorded this may not be accurate. First initial reports stated that the number of death casualties was as high as 1,000 however, that number was later changed to 478 due to fears of residents and prospective visitors being kept away. A century later there were new estimates that the earthquake and fires together put loss of life at more than three thousand people (Potter, 2008).…

Ground motion is when the shaking of the ground causes the passage of seismic waves, especially surface waves, near the epicenter of the earthquake. Ground motion is responsible for the most damage during an earthquake and is thus a primary effect of an earthquake. Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur after a main earthquake, and in most causes there are many of these. Fire is a hazard of earthquakes, because power lines may be knocked down and natural gas lines may rupture due to an earthquake. Fires are often started closely following an earthquake.…

Earthquakes in the state of California occur almost on a daily basis; these earthquakes are often not felt because of its low magnitude, but it is still recorded. However, Californians have experienced destructive earthquakes dating back to January 9, 1857 (Morrison). This earthquake occurred in Fort Tejon with a magnitude of 7.9 (Morrison). The damage, however, was not as devastating due to the minimal houses that were built in that area. In 1906, an earthquake so catastrophic that till today it remains one of the most significant earthquakes in the history of the United States, occurred in one of California’s prominent cities, San Francisco.…

The San Andreas Fault is perhaps the most dangerous and destructive fault lines in North America. Passing through one of the most populous areas of the United States, the San Andreas Fault line stretches nearly the entire western seaboard of California (Lynch). The infamous earthquake of San Francisco of 1906 is likely the reason the fault has been so ill-reputed. Furthermore, the fault has been relatively inactive and the chance for a large rupture which could span hundreds of kilometers along the fault to be extremely deadly grow increasingly higher as the time passes.…

When two rocks suddenly move against each other, an energy drive is generated in the form of waves causing the trembling of the earth. Earthquakes vary in severity with some being so severe that they can bring down large buildings and cause massive loss of life. However, some of the earthquakes that occur in the world are so mild that people living in the particular area can hardly feel them.…

A tsunami is a seismic sea wave. Displacement of water forms a sequence of waves and this generally happens in an ocean or a large lake. Tsunamis are different because normal waves are caused by wind or tides, which is actually generated by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun. According to Source 1, the first recorded tsunami was back in 7000-6000 BCE and this was in Portugal but the primary cause is unknown. Since then there have been many tsunamis that have caused damage, two of the moderately recent ones were the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami and the 2011 Tohoku tsunami.…
