Every year, millions of Americans undergo major heart surgeries costing billions of dollars. To treat cancer, patients deal with harsh medications and treatments with a handful of unpleasant side effects. Medical researchers like John McDougall, John Robbins, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, and Caldwell Esselstyn never cease to search for new safer treatments to treat the top diseases in the country. They, along with many others, are discovering that a plant-based diet can prevent and treat the top killers in America. Americans face problems such as heart disease, cancer, and obesity in the form of hamburgers and milkshakes. This paper explores these ideas and why they are effective treatments. It also discusses the cold shoulder many suffering Americans give to the idea of changing to a simple, healthy, and potentially life saving diet that could save them and the health care industry billions of dollars. This year more than 1 million Americans will have coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty, costing the federal government more than $15.6 billion dollars. (Robbins 23) The death rate in the United States for breast cancer is almost 25% and 150,000 lives are lost due to lung cancer each year (Robbins 46) Every single year, over 280,000 American citizens die from diseases caused by excess weight. These diseases are easily preventable, yet every year the number grows and grows because we do not change our diets and eating behaviors until after we receive deathly diagnosis.…
