Domestic violence just about affects everyone. It is not at all only a personal or private problem within a family. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, between 1998 and 2002, over 1.2 million incidents of family violence were reported to the police. Of the 1.2 million incidents, only 36% resulted in arrest. Domestic violence is a serious concern that many times gets overlooked by the many other social issues this world has.
This paper will explore a historical look at this issue, the types of abuse there are, the type of impact abuse has on a victim, and why an issue such as this should be taught in the high school curriculum. Before and during the nineteenth century, when a women became married, she lost property, personal possessions, and rights. The court system in this time period believed once two people became married, they were one. 1870 is the period of time wife-beating became legal in most states. By the 1970’s domestic violence became a serious social issue that the public knew needed some attention. Even though during the late 1970’s Americans knew women were being abused, people still felt as if it was not as big of a problem to be stopped. Today, we are living in the twenty first century, this is much more than a social issue. The amount of children and teens witnessing abuse let alone being abused themselves, need serious help. Victims of domestic violence victims can have increased anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and, eating disorders. Half of youth who are victims of abuse and rape attempt suicide. Dealing with the effects of domestic violence can be a lot to handle. When something such as this has happened, a victim may have the want to self-medicate through the use of drugs or alcohol to help cope with the traumatic event. Using drugs or alcohol can bring a sense of control of one’s self as a release of tension, although, occasionally it can result in harm or death.
