Most people do not know what osteoporosis really is. So what is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is where bones lose protein and calcium. With the lowering of calcium and proteins also comes with the lowering of bone mass and strength. The lowering amount of much needed bone proteins and calcium ultimately leads to bone breakage. In the United States there are approximately forty four million citizens suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass. The majority of people suffering from osteoporosis or low bone mass in America are over the age of 50 and are female. Researches show that eighty percent of the people who have osteoporosis are women. It is estimated that each year there are over 1.5 million fractures resulting from osteoporosis. The lost of calcium decreases the density in the bones which makes the bones become fragile. Osteoporosis also causes many more and much bigger holes in the spongy bone which ultimately decreases the strength of the bone. The bone thins when someone has osteoporosis which makes it really easy to fracture or break bones. If a bone can not withstand much pressure from certain angles it will eventually break. The most common areas of fractures due to osteoporosis are in the wrist, the hip, and the vertebrae. A fracture of a bone can be caused by increased pressure, a bump, a fall, compression of a bone or even a sneeze. Yes, people with osteoporosis can fracture a rib by simply just sneezing! Doctors could prescribe medications such as hormone replacement therapy to females hoping to increase the estrogen level in her body. They could also take either Alendronate or Calcitonin which are both drugs that stop the loss of bone, help rebuild the bone and help lessen the risk of a fracture significantly. Alendronate protects the bones from the osteoclasts while calcitonin also helps protect the bone by slowing down the osteoclasts cells. Osteoclasts cells destroy old bone tissue. Having a healthy diet that is high in both calcium and vitamin D while working out or exercising are preventions and also treatments of osteoporosis. Eating a lot of calcium and working out will strengthen your bones and decrease the chance of fracturing a bone. Lastly, someone could have surgery. Surgery is really just a treatment that fixes or repairs a fracture that was caused by osteoporosis. There is not a surgery that actually gets rid of osteoporosis or cures it.
