The Cause Of Goldfish's Behavior

Decent Essays
Goldfish are susceptible to jumping out of their tanks, due to changes in their environment. Another argument is that goldfish are resilient and adaptable, thus the disorder in their routine is trivial. Children and college students are the two major groups that own these fish. Because of the child’s lack of responsibility and the students schedule, it is easy for the fish to become neglected. The main reasons a fish would engage in behavior such as suicide, is because of a lack of oxygen supply - by not using a filter - or being in continual darkness. These situations would cause the goldfish to undergo a state of panic, resulting in the fish to leap out of its tank.

The fish and its life, which is consistently mentioned throughout the story, is a representation of the family’s unity. The narrator first mentions the fish in a flashback at around the same time that she is reflecting back on her memories of her father and their daily routine. The father is the one who brings in the live fish and dumps it in the sink. This is notable because at this point in the narrative, the family is still seen as a cohesive unit and this parallels with how the fish is still alive. The next point in the narrative where the fish is mentioned is right after certain problems are shown to plague the family, such as the obvious language barrier that separates the parents from their children and the problem of the father and the brother’s conflicting attitudes towards the son’s unwillingness to keep hold of his Malaysian heritage.…

While the hatchery does raise thousands of young fish, many of them don’t survive long enough to reproduce and the complex steps that go into their reproduction is disrupted by faulty human practices. Firstly, fish like salmon are artificially fertilized and fed food treated with antibiotics and chemicals that negatively affect the fish. Since the fish are kept in small, confined spaces, the fish become less intelligent because they live in a simplified environment. Because there is a lack of diversity in their environment, there is a negative psychological effect on the fish that makes them less likely to survive in the completely different environment of the wild. Also, since they do not live in streams, fish like salmon are unable to live with a specific scent that will guide them back home to reproduce.…
