The cause of food poisoning found in meat, in this case undercooked burgers is due to a failure to cook it thoroughly and kill all the bacteria present. Food poisoning is caused by eating or drinking contaminated products. E. coli is not harmful and most of the people who suffer this infection recover within a few days without any treatments.

E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella Seravars, Shigella, Staphylococcus Aureus and Listeria Monocytogenes are common pathogens found in beef. Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli O157:H7 is the most popular one, these harmful bacteria lives in the intestine of the cattle, goats, sheep deer and elk without causing the animal any ill health. The carriage of this bacteria is unable to be recognised by farmers or their vets. Bacteria may travel out of the intestine and into food products when it’s slaughtered. The most common source of infection is minced (ground) beef, because the meat is passed through the grinding machinery and the germs that where on the outside of the beef are now ground inside contaminated with bacteria. Some people do not realise that steaks and burgers are completely different, harmful bacteria is present on several different cuts of meat. When a steak is seared from both sides, all the bacteria present is killed. Once bacteria is inside the food products its can survive both refrigerator and freezer temperatures but by the process of cooking meat, bacteria can be killed.
