The source of the disorder in Macbeth is the witches’ tampering with the Great Chain of Being, as they tell Macbeth he will be king and tell Banquo his children will be kings despite them not being the rightful kings. The witches proclaiming that Macbeth will become king causes disorder because Macbeth kills King Duncan as a result. The Great Chain of Being has the King at the top of the human realm and the noblemen below. However, when Macbeth killed Duncan and became king this led to disorder as the Chain was disturbed. This caused disorder in the other realms as the Old Man says, “A falcon tow’ring in her pride of place, was by a mousing owl hawked at and killed” (II.iv 15-16).
