It is estimated that about 1 percent pf the population in Western countries suffer from Celiac disease and it is most common in Caucasians. In individuals that are asymptomatic, the disease can be triggered or becomes active for the first time after surgery, childbirth, viral infection or a severe emotional stressor ("Symptoms and causes - celiac disease - mayo clinic," n.d.). Celiac disease is considered hereditary and it is said that if one member of a family has the disease, about 1 out of 10 other members of that family will also likely have it. If a person has an autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune thyroid or liver disease, Addison’s disease or Sjogren’s syndrome they are also more likely to have Celiac disease as well.
