From the many California laws, one particular abortion law is the cause of much controversy. This controversial California law states that a parent’s approval for an underaged girl to obtain an abortion is not mandatory (National Center for Youth Law). There are many who oppose this law but there are others who support it. Parental notification and approval should be mandatory for a minor to receive an abortion since the parent/guardian is legally responsible for the minor and the underaged girl’s health can be placed in great danger.

Like with all other medical procedures or medications, there could be unexpected complications and serious/negative effects to the patient. Patricia Lee June informs us in her report, Induced Abortion: Risks That May Impact Adolescents, Young Adults, and Their Children, “There are other inherent risks to surgical abortions such as uterine perforation, cervical lacerations, and hemorrhage, in addition to inherent risks of anesthesia.” Because these results are serious and dangerous, if something like this were to go wrong with the minor’s abortion, the parents would not be aware which would cause the minor much pain and suffering. If an abortion can leave physical and psychological scars on an adult, the scars this leaves on minors can be much more serious. For example, the adolescent could feel guilty after an abortion and due to the lack of aid needed to recover, she can fall into a depression or can suffer from post-traumatic stress. The pro-life organization, Operation Rescue, states, “Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS) is a type of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It occurs when a woman is unable to work through her emotional responses due to the trauma of an abortion.” If the minor were to suffer from such disorder, she might not ask for help from her parents or seek help at all, this would not allow the minor to heal and would force her to struggle on her own. Because there are many problems that can arise during or after an abortion, a minor’s parents should always be involved. Without them involved, there would be no one to keep an eye on the minor in case of a negative reaction, this lack of supervision could have devastating results to the underaged youth’s
