Morality is also shaped by the environment in which someone is in, such as setting or social classes. For example, if you live in deplorable conditions or in a low class your morale will be different from another person’s moral who lives in favorable conditions and in a higher social class. This is a result of our caregivers’ different emotions towards society as a consequence of various economic pressures. This can be seen in Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, as Sofia Semionovna, also known as Sonya, is described as a “...the daughter who sold herself for the sake of a bad-tempered and consumptive stepmother, for the sake of someone’s little children.”(Dostoyevsky 1.2.20) Sonya had been driven to become a prostitute to help support her family, as her father has fallen into an alcoholic state, and her mother is ill with fatal tuberculosis, as a cause of poverty. She recognizes that being a prostitute is an egregious act, however, she becomes a prostitute out of necessity due to her poverty up to the point where Sonya doesn 't care what other people say. This diversity is seen in the different races and ethnicities that can be seen in the human race. This leads to no two individuals to have the same opinions, personalities, social positions, and moral values since these changes up to a definitive extend. Diversity in the environment is a major cause of one’s morality shaping over time, and our environment has plenty social classes, meaning that nurture conditions have effects towards one’s moral. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov “had lately ceased even to feel the weight of the poverty that crushed him. He had completely lost interest in his day-to-day affairs, and he had no wish to recover such interest.”(Dostoyevsky, 1.1.1) Raskolnikov knows that going to college is essential since this is one of his obligatory daily affairs. However, he has stopped attending and doesn’t care about attending college anymore and finishing his career.
