Teens with depression tend to engage in imprudent behavior which can be detrimental to their health. As previously mentioned the University of Texas did a study of Thirtytwo teens, 19 of whom were maltreated as children, the study also found that four of the maltreated teens and one of the control teens had developed substance abuse issues. The same study by the University of Wisconsin also found connectivity problems with the teens superior longitudinal fasciculus( SLF) and the right cingulum-hippocampus projection(CGH-R). The superior longitudinal fasciculus is used in planning behavior and language processing. The cingulum-hippocampus is linked to emotional processing and abstract thought. Hilden is apart of that six point one percent of the population that suffers from major depressive disorder. The emotional and mental trauma are the leading downfalls of his mental health. Holden's inability to process emotion and his lack of long term planning are harmful, The saf thing holden will more than likely never received the help that he needs, depression and mental illness in general remain untreated in the United States still to this day/ If holden is to ever build a relationship with his parents then he has to learn how to deal with his emotions specifically his feeling of abandonment. The writer of The Catcher In The Rye J.D.salinger, suffer from depression so is it really hard to believe that he would create a character that he himself could relate to. If holden is ever to function in society then he has to deal with his problems like most teens only his problems are deeper and harder to face.
