Reflection Paper: Pull The Next One Up

Growing up I played competitive softball, so my family’s summers were spent driving to ball fields around the United States while I played in tournament after tournament. Playing first base, I always admired the position at the center of the field, the pitcher. It seemed that games could be won and lost based solely on that position. I both craved and shied away from the pressure. As I reflect on my softball days, it seems that the relationship between pitcher and catcher was the single most important factor for a successful team. The pitcher pours her heart out on the mound, but every effort, ball, strike or in the dirt is carefully received by the catcher. When things are going well the catcher catches with a smile, and when they are tough the catcher is there with an encouraging word. Much like the two players I admired most, my teaching philosophy is built around two philosophies: be a role model for students while giving them a choice, and to build and foster relationships.

This past school year my class had a theme of “Pull the Next One Up” based on The Latin School Belief Film Project. During writing group time the whole purpose was to highlight the strengths that each writer brought to the table in addition to things that they could work on to improve writing. Our hope was that as a class we were pulling the next writer up, so that writer could continue the cycle. Year round I work to build an environment that is filled with trust and nurtures risk-taking. Since starting conferencing with students, I have seen improvement in my students ideas, organization, grammar and literary skills. Conferencing not only makes my students better writers, but helps the class build stronger

For my final portfolio, I chose to revise a shorter essay, “Potential Ramifications of a Trump Presidency,” and a longer essay, “Assignment 7: Finding Place Research Project.” I chose these two essays specifically because of their differences. The former is shorter, more informal, and includes more of my thoughts and opinions. The latter is a longer research paper, and thus is more formal and less biased as I attempted to give a brief history of gentrification and its impacts on East Liberty.…

Re-entering the Game Based on past and current practice, softball should be brought back to the 2020 Olympics. Softball and baseball were recently removed after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The International Olympic Committee, also known as the IOC, decided that they needed to lessen the number of sports in the Olympics and baseball and softball were among the first to be removed. From the first game in the Olympics in 1966, to the last in 2008, the only teams to ever win medals were the United States, Japan, China, and Australia. A major reason for the removal of softball was that out of all those medals the United States had the majority; three gold medals and one bronze (“Softball”).…

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

The first skill that was used to engage my client was using an open ended question at the beginning of my interview. According to Hohman (2002), “open-ended questions are those that have a variety of possible answers and do not limit the client” (p.20) using this strategy allows the client to explore his own thoughts and it encourages the client to do most of the talking. I started my conversation with my client by asking a simple open question for example “how was his day going ?” later I saw myself asking deeper questions such as “You mention that your brother is an alcoholic, how is your relationship with your brother?” this allowed me to listen to my client story in his own words and to keep the interviewing flowing.…
