James Thurber's short story "The Catbird Seat" is set early 1940’s in New York. Mr. Erwin Martin is the main protagonist who is a devoted worker to P $ S Company. Martin’s been working for the Company for twenty-two years as filler, and is great at it. Everything is perfect for Martin until the antagonist Mrs. Ulgine Barrows is hired to the company. Martin is complex in ways, however he is simple when it comes to his job. All he wants is to stay in routine as he always does everyday. Martin finds everything annoying about Barrows (). Martin tips over the edge when he finds out about Barrows downsizing the company. Feeling threaten about his position, and the future of P & S for the worst, Martin plans to kill or “rub out” Barrows. Martin goes
