Throughout the narrative, the language used by Monmontresor shows deep emotion and disturbing passion for revenge and the punishment of Fortunato. At the beginning of the story Monmontresor states “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” (L 1-2), these heavy words showcase Monmontresors hate and sets a very dark tone for the rest of the story. The reason the language that Poe uses as seen above creates such an unforgettable dark tale comes from the fact that the main character feels so much rage for a person just from getting insulted by them. The fact that we do not know what exactly happened between these two characters makes this plot of revenge even more creepy.

An example of this is when Monmontresor describes the festivities occurring when he states “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season,” (L 21), This description of a seeming happy and innocent event and time creates a creepy feeling. The way the Poe emphasized on the madness and chaos of the carnival season instead of the food and games gives the audience a taste of how this narrative will play out and feel like. The fact that even happy things like carnivals are perverted and turned sinister makes the Cask of Amontillado even more dark. In the story it is extremely disturbing at how happy Monmontresor is on finding Fortunato, for example when he states “I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand” (L 25-26). This detail shows that the murder of Fortunato was not one that was spur of the moment but one that was cold, calculated, planned, and enjoyed. This description of how happy Mommontresor was at finding Fortunato may be small but shows how big of an impact certain words can have on an idea or story. All these elements that Poe use come together and mesh well enough to make a chilling short
