The Cask Of Amontillado Narrative Analysis

In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” the purpose of first person narration was to understand the protagonist’s evil intention when trying to seek revenge on Fortunato. Montressor showed signs of being nice, caring, and full of positive energy towards Fortunato in the story to get him where he wanted. Having the story in first person made it so the audience would be able to know that Montressor’s evil emotion never changed throughout the story. Another reason would be to better demonstrate the mind games that Montressor uses to lead Fortunato into his trap that lays within the catacombs. He makes it seems as though he worried for Fortunato in the story but because it is in first person we know that it is to lure his prey deeper into his plan.
One of the ways that Poe heightens the suspense in “The Cask of Amontillado” is by adding imagery into the story. This gives more details as to specifically what is happening during the moment of the story to make it seems as if though the audience was there themselves. Quoting from the story “The Cask of Amontillado” Montressor says, “It is not far now. But I can see you are trembling with the cold. Come! Let us go back before it is too late”.
